Range: —Hispaniola; Mexico; Costa Rica and Panama; Guyana and southeastern Venezuela; Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia (LP).
Ecology: —Rare; open habitats in humid montane forests, around timberline, and in shrubby paramos; 3300 m in Bolivia, elsewhere at (1000) 1400–3300 m .
Notes: —Possibly hybridizes with S. rubiginosus ( Windisch 2278, AAU, GH, MO, NY, UC, US, Z).
