Remarks: The species is endemic to Madeira Archipelago and polytypic with three known subspecies ( Lorenz 2021): the nominal subspecies is endemic of Madeira Island, S. abbreviatus cimensis Cockerell occurs in Porto Santo Island and S. abbreviatus desertarum is restricted to the Desertas Islands. The latter subspecies is a common ground-dwelling subspecies in the three islands of Desertas, often found under stones together with Nesarpalus cimensis cimensis and Calathus complantus vandeli .
