Leaves 10-30 cm, in basal rosette, ovate-triangular, cordate with open sinus, dentate or serrate, glabrous; lamina of mature leaves as long as petiole. Stipules linear-lanceolate. Flowers 1-2-5 cm, reddish- or violet-purple, fragrant. Sepals obtuse. Spur 4-6 mm, curved, obtuse, rather slender. Capsule glabrous. 2« = 24. Calcareous rocks in mountain regions. • C. Romania. Rm.

Sometimes regarded as a subspecies of V. macroceras Bunge in Ledeb., FI. Altaica 1: 256 (1829). The other subspecies occur in the Caucasus and the Altai.
