Low, spreading bush up to 0- 8 m; joints 8-15(-30) cm, obovate to oblong, rather thick, green or bluish-green. Leaves 3-4 mm, subulate, stout; areoles distant, brownish-lanate; spines 0-2, 1 -4 cm, rigid, terete, yellow; glochids short. Flowers 6-7 cm in diameter, yellow; filaments yellow to greenish; style usually white; stigma-lobes white or greenish. Fruit 4-6 cm, obovoid, with slender base and more or less depressed umbilicus, red. Naturalized on the coast of S.E. France. [Ga.] (IF. Cuba, S.E. United States.)
