Annual 2-16 cm. Leaves opposite. Flowers with distinct pedicel up to 23 mm. Sepals 4, much longer than mature capsule; petals 4, ovate, pale red, shorter than sepals; stamens 8; carpels 4. Capsule globose or depressed. Seeds almost straight or asymmetrically horseshoe-shaped, with long arm 2-2-5 times as long as short arm; reticulations on testa usually hexagonal at base of seed. S. W. Europe and W. Mediterranean region. BI Co Ga Hs Lu Sa Si.
