Stems rooting at the nodes. Leaflets 10-25(-40) mm, obovate or elliptical; petioles 20-200 mm. Heads usually 40- to 80-flowered; peduncles 50-300 mm. Upper calyx-teeth longer than the rest; corolla 7-10 mm, white or pale pink, rarely deep red; standard 2-21 times as long as the calyx. 2« = 32, Almost throughout the range o f the species.

Plants from the high mountains of Europe are usually more dwarf with short creeping stems, smaller leaves, peduncles 10-30(-60) mm and heads with fewer flowers.
