Type species: Arulenus punctatus Stål, 1877 , by monotypy.
Composition. Three species are known from Mindanao Island in the Philippines: Hirrius punctatus ( Stål, 1877) , H. mindanaensis Günther, 1938 , and H. ruber Skejo, Patano et Kaslo, 2024 ( Stål, 1877; Bolívar, 1887; Günther, 1938; Skejo et al., 2024). A new species from this island is described below. An updated key to species of the genus Hirrius is also provided.

1(4) Hindwings visible under the pronotum in lateral view.
2(3) Prozonal carinae distinct. Hind femora robust, 2.3–2.4 times as long as wide. Pronotum black or dark brown with light marks. Abdominal sternites black................................................................. H. mindanaensis
3(2) Prozonal carinae indistinct. Hind femora elongated, 3.0–3.1 times as long as wide. Pronotum uniformly black. Abdominal sternites red.................................................................................... H. ruber
4(1) Apterous. (Prozonal carinae indistinct; hind femora 2.2–2.7 times as long as wide).
5(6) Infrascapular area broad. Antennae completely black. Preapical segments of antennae strongly widened, 10th antennomere 1.7– 2 times as long as wide. Pronotum black with two bright red, yellow or orange spots between the humeral angles. Abdominal sternites and subgenital plate black......................................................... 6(5) Infrascapular area narrow. Basal part of antennae blackish brown, apical ones black. Preapical segments of antennae slightly widened, 10th antennomere 2.4 ( ♀) or 3.0 ( ♂) times as long as wide. Male anterior part of pronotum light brown, female pronotum with two almost completely fused light brown spots between the humeral angles. Abdominal sternites brown; in female subgenital plate black, in male plate blackish..................................... H. kitangladensis sp. nov.
