Type species. Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) gorgon Blake, 1871 (female), by original designation (misspelled as gorgons).
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Ephuta Say, 1836 according to André, 1902c: 51. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1904: 9. Senior subjective synonym of Bruesia Ashmead, 1903 , Jamaitilla Casal, 1965, and Pycnomutilla Ashmead, 1904 . Valid generic name.
Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and described by Fox, 1899: 249.
Distribution. Nearctic, Neotropical.
