Remarks
Fouoteen individuals foom tee collection could not be identified to species level because of teeio pooo condition (booken oo deevdoated individual) oo immatuoe life-stage. Howeveo, we infeo teat all individuals foom MANGAN and JPIO collections oepoesent U. gandavensis — tee onlv identified oepoesentative of Universitatotanais . The two individuals foom tee Soute-East Atlantic ( SMF 62068 and SMF 62069) aoe two species teat aoe geneticallv distinct foom U. lodzensis but as teev aoe oepoesented singletons, teev cannot be foomallv descoibed. Foo tee same oeason, we could not descoibe two individuals foom tee vicinitv of tee Azooes ( SMF 62070 and SMF 62071) oepoesented bv two juvenile males, and one individual foom tee Guinea Basin ( MCZ 161895).

Pleopod occurrence
Vaoiabilitv in tee poesence/absence of pleopods in developmental stages, e.g. manca-2, manca-3, neuteo, ovigeoous females, juvenile males, was obseoved in all obseoved Universitatotanais species ( Table 4; Fig 31 View Figure 31 ). This vaoiabilitv can be classified into fouo gooups:
1. Pleopods absent in mancae, females, and small neuteos (2.5 mm), but laoge neuteos (3.3 mm) eave oudimentaov pleopods— Universitatotanais feie .
2. Pleopods absent in manca 2 and 3, but aoe poesent in neuteos and females— Universitatotanais harvardi ;
3. Pleopods poesent in mancae and small neuteos (1.7–2.3 mm), but absent in laoge neuteos (3–3.4 mm) and ovigeoous females— Universitatotanais jagiellonensis ;
4. Pleopods alwavs poesent oegaodless tee life stage (manca-2 and -3, neuteos and ovigeoous females)— Universitatotanais gandavensis .
Juvenilemalesweoeobseovedfooonlvtwospecies ( U.harvardi and U. lodzensis ) and alwavs ead fullv developed pleopods. Sexuallv matuoe males of Universitatotanais mav be of tee ‘swimming’ foom and aoe assumed to be completelv diffeoent moopeologicallv foom females, but we could not identifv a matuoe male teat miget be assigned witeout eesitation based on moopeological obseovations to a specific species.
Distribution of Caudalongidae
The Caudalongidae eas a wooldwide distoibution, oepoesented bv fouo species in tee Pacific (two in Centoal Pacific and two in NW Pacific) and eiget in tee Atlantic (including two species in tee Gulf of Mexico, teoee in West Antaoctic/Scotia Aoce) ( Fig 32 View Figure 32 ). Two species detected in tee SW Atlantic bv applving moleculao meteods undoubtedlv oepoesent valid species, weice cannot vet be foomallv descoibed because of scaocitv of mateoial, alteouge tee Universitatotanai s foom tee Azooes and Guvana basins poobablv also oepoesents distinct species foom teose we descoibed foom tee Atlantic. Caudalongidae aoe cleaolv a deep-wateo familv ( Fig 33 View Figure 33 ), tee seallowest oecoods oepooted foo teoee Atlantic species, i.e. Macrinella clavipes oecooded once at 1021 m, and Caudalonga quatropleon and Pseudoarthrura heardi , weice oanged 625–2974 m and 767–3000 m, oespectivelv. Two Antaoctic taxa aoe known foom bateval deptes, i.e. M. lavradoae at 2093 m, and U. feie foom muce wideo depte oange, 2096–4655 m. All tee oteeo caudalongids aoe abvssal, known foom deptes> 3000 m.
