Sperchon monstruosus Bader, 1957 : Schwoerbel (1959) syn. to S. hibernicus Halbert, 1944 Sperchon monstruosus Bader, 1957 : Pešiċ (2006)

Material examined: Numerous specimens from Britain and Ireland including some from the Orkney Isles off northern Scotland.

Discussion: Although Schwoerbel (1959, p.526) put S. monstruosus Bader into synonymy under S. hibernicus Halbert , a placement recorded by K. O. Viets (1987, p.699), Pešić (2006), perhaps unaware of this change in species status, recorded S. monstruosus from Bulgaria. Interestingly, Schwoerbel ( op. cit) considered S. hibernicus to be a ‘Mediterranean species’ but it is now known to have a broader European distribution.
