Geographic & bathymetric distribution. Western Atlantic from USA (North Carolina), Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea to Brazil (Bahia); 29–585 m ( Pérez Farfante & Kensley 1997; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records for Venezuela: Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón state ( D’Incao 1995) Delta Amacuro, Sucre states and Margarita Island ( Lira et al. 2017). Holthuis (1980) remarked that it was very likely that Ewald’s specimens of S. stimpsoni cited for Venezuela do not belong to the true S. stimpsoni , but to S. burkenroadi , which has about the same range, but occurs less deep and predominantly on mud, mud-shell, or mud-sand bottoms. Even though S. stimpsoni has been reported to Venezuela since that for others authors (e.g. Rodríguez 1980; Severeyn & Rodríguez 2000), this species is not considered here because none of them reported the depth where the specimens were caught.
