Shrub; stem 1-2 m, 4-6 cm in diameter, simple or sparingly branched near the base, procumbent to decumbent; internodesas in 5. Leaves 12-20 x 5—10(—15) cm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, somewhat glaucous; marginal spines 4-6 mm, white at first, later yellow or black. Inflorescence 40-60 cm, with 2-5 branches. Racemes c. 10 x 12 cm, subcapitate; bracts c. 10 mm; pedicels 40-45 mm at base of raceme, shorter above. Perianth 40-50 mm, dull scarlet; segments closely contiguous but free. Stamens scarcely exceeding perianth. Naturalized from gardens near the coast of S.E. France. [Ga.] (South Africa.)
