Floating leaves up to 12-5x 7 cm, ovate to elliptical or lanceolate, cuneate to subcordate at the base, opaque; petiole often longer than the lamina, with a discoloured flexible joint immediately below the lamina. Submerged leaves less than 3 mm wide, reduced to narrowly linear, obtuse, opaque phyllodes, often disappearing early. Stipules large, closely veined, often fibrous-persistent. Fruitlets 3-4 mm. 2« = 52. Almost throughout Europe. All except Az BI?Cr Sb?Tu.

P. xfluitans Roth , Tent. FI. Germ. 1: 72 (1788) ( P. sterilis Hagström ) (1 x 5) and P. x sparganifolius Laest. ex Fries, Nov. FI. Suec. Mantissa 1: 9 (1832) (1 x 6) are the most frequent hybrids of 1, from which they differ in their laminate (not phyllodal) submerged leaves.
