Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from other species of the E. (En.) valentis species group by the occiput bearing several irregular rows of strong setae, four marginal scutellar setae, halter with pale knob, anteroventral digitiform process of male hind femur without short basal lobe and with pair of short lobes medial to digitiform anteroventral process ( Figs 255, 256 View FIGURES 251–256 ), and wing length usually less than 7 mm.

Redescription. Wing length 6.0– 6.8 mm. Male. Similar to E. (En.) aeripes , except as follows: head with occiput bearing several irregular rows of strong setae, similar in size to ocellar setae. Postpedicel long and tapered, 3× longer than basal width; stylus slightly longer than basal width of postpedicel. Palpus orange brown.

Scutum with two pairs of broad brownish vittae. Scutum with 1 long and 1 shorter posterior npl, with 1–3 shorter anterior npl. Scutellum usually with 2 pairs of long sctl, widely separated medially; occasionally with short, slender setulae.

Hind femur with anteroventral process digitiform with tuft of black apical setae and numerous setae on stalk, without short basal lobe; pair of short knob-like lobes medial to digitiform anteroventral process; apex with preapical row of 4–5 flattened, black posterior setae; preapical anterior seta strong, nearly as long as width of femur ( Figs 255, 256 View FIGURES 251–256 ). Hind tibia slightly incurved at base, with broad, somewhat flattened anteroventral digitiform process on basal quarter, with appressed black setae on outer margin; posteroventrally with similar broad process, not flattened dorsally, with crown of black apical setae, similar to setae on anteroventral process ( Figs 255, 256 View FIGURES 251–256 ).

Wing with R 5 ending at wing tip. Halter pale, orange brown.

Abdomen without posterior margin of tergites glossy. Terminalia ( Fig. 263 View FIGURES 262–265 ): cercus without knob-like projection in apical cleft; posterior lobe with tooth-like projection apically. Hypandrium not prolonged laterally.

Female. Similar to male, except as follows: hindleg without modified setae and processes; abdominal pleural membrane with darkened, expanded region.

Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 250 View FIGURES 249–250 ). Empis (En.) disconvenita is known only from central California and adults have been collected from February to May.

Nuptial gift presentation. Form unknown.
