Empis ( Enoplempis) bigoti View in CoL species group
( Figs 2, 3 View FIGURES 1–3 , 6–11 View FIGURES 6–14 , 41–81 View FIGURES 41–45 View FIGURES 46–51 View FIGURES 52–53 View FIGURE 54 View FIGURES 55–58 View FIGURES 59–61 View FIGURES 62–70 View FIGURES 71–75 View FIGURES 76–79 View FIGURES 80–81 , 91, 92 View FIGURES 91–93 )
Seven species are included in this group, E. ( En.) aerobatica Melander , E. ( En.) bigoti Melander , E. ( En.) collinsi sp. nov., E. ( En.) montgomeryi sp. nov., E. ( En.) multifaria sp. nov., E. ( En.) paraerobatica sp. nov. and E. ( En.) podagra Melander , which are distinguished by the phallus usually strongly attenuated at mid-length with narrowed, sinuous apical half ( e.g., Figs 52, 53 View FIGURES 52–53 , 77 View FIGURES 76–79 , 92 View FIGURES 91–93 ), hypandrium bare, subepandrial process present, apex of epandrial lamella usually slightly upturned ( e.g., Figs 61 View FIGURES 59–61 , 91 View FIGURES 91–93 ), abdomen either mostly entirely shiny ( e.g., Fig. 73 View FIGURES 71–75 ) or with distinct shiny tergal bands separated by dense pruinescence ( e.g., Fig. 71 View FIGURES 71–75 , except E. ( En.) collinsi , Fig. 48 View FIGURES 46–51 ), and male hind femur with preapical row of thickened posterior setae ( e.g., Fig. 44 View FIGURES 41–45 ). In addition, males of this species group ( i.e., E. ( En.) aerobatica , E. ( En.) bigoti ) produce balloons ( Figs 6–11 View FIGURES 6–14 ).
