Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from E. (En.) woodleyi sp. nov. by the male tergite 7 with pair of rounded, membranous lateral lobes ( Fig. 243 View FIGURES 243–248 ), subepandrial process long, extending beyond epandrium, and phallus with 4–5 teeth-like, marginal projections in posterior view.
Description. Wing length 3.7–4.4 mm. Male. Head dark in ground-colour, with greyish pruinescence. Eyes holoptic, upper ommatidia slightly enlarged. Frons forming small triangular plate above antennae; without short setulae along inner margin of eye. Face without setae; short, parallel-sided towards mouthparts, with oral margin dark and shiny. Ocellar triangle elevated, with thin greyish pruinescence, with pair of parallel ocellar setae and several pairs of short setulae. Occiput bearing single row of setae, slightly shorter than ocellar setae, longer and finer ventrally; postocular setae shorter than occipital row; postocellar region without setae. Antenna dark brown; scape 2× longer than pedicel, with short, black setae; pedicel with ring of apical setae; postpedicel long, tapered, 4× longer than basal width; stylus 2× longer than basal width of postpedicel. Palpus pale brown, with dark setulae. Proboscis reddish brown, length less than 2× head height; labellum with short, dark setae.
Thorax dark brown in ground-colour, densely grey pruinescent, with pair of narrow shiny vittae between acr and dc rows, ending at prescutellar depression and pair of broader outer vittae extending to posterior margin of postalar ridge; apex of postpronotal lobe and postalar ridge yellowish brown ( Fig. 239 View FIGURES 239–242 ). All thoracic setae pale brown. Proepisternum with several pairs of short setae on lower section; upper proepisternum in front of spiracle without setae. Prosternum bare. Antepronotum with row of short setae. Postpronotum with 1 long seta and several short setae. Scutum with short, fine uniserial acr; dc slightly longer, stronger than acr, increasing in length posteriorly; 2–3 posterior npl, with several shorter anterior npl; 1 presut spal; 1 psut spal; 1 pal. Scutellum with 1 pair of long, widely separated apical sctl, with 1 pair of outer marginal setae; disc bare. Laterotergite with narrow patch of setae. Anterior and posterior spiracles pale.
Legs slender, shiny yellowish brown, with apex of tibiae and tarsi darker; coxae, especially fore coxa with thin greyish pruinescence ( Fig. 240 View FIGURES 239–242 ). Coxae with thin pale setae. Hind trochanter with numerous setulae. Fore femur sparely clothed in short, pale setae. Fore tibia similarly sparsely setose, with several short anterodorsal setae; several weakly differentiated dorsal and ventral preapical setae. Fore tarsomere 1 slightly swollen, with long dorsal setae, longer than width of tarsomere; all tarsomeres with biserial row of spine-like ventral setae; tarsomeres 1–4 with apicolateral pair of spine-like setae, longer than width of segment, except pair on tarsomere 4 shorter than width. Mid femur with dense whitish ventral pile; posteroventral row of fine setae, longer distally. Mid tibia with 2–3 pairs of short anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae and several preapical setae; ventral face with erect setulae, shorter than half width of tibia. Mid tarsus slender, with ventral setae similar to fore tarsus. Hind femur slightly expanded apically, with flattened, knob-like anteroventral preapical process, posterior margin of process with short, pointed projection and posterior margin with ridge of 3 flattened, truncate setae with tuft of black setae directed posteriorly; apex with preapical row of 2–3 flattened, black, short, blunt posterior setae; preapical anterior seta developed, shorter than width of femur ( Figs 241, 242 View FIGURES 239–242 ). Hind tibia clavate, slightly twisted proximally; dorsal setae long, more than twice width of tibia; ventral margin with dense setae shorter than tibial width; posteroventral digitiform process with whitish faces, strongly curved to anterior margin of tibia; lower margin with short black setae, increasing in length apically; with seta in posteroapical comb ( Figs 240–242 View FIGURES 239–242 ). Hind tarsus with tarsomere 1 slightly inflated, with long dorsal setae, similar to tibia; remaining tarsomeres similar to mid and fore tarsi.
Wing infuscate with dark veins; all veins complete (except Sc, CuA+CuP), well sclerotized, except CuA+CuP rather weak not reaching wing margin. Basal costal seta absent. R 5 and M 1 slightly divergent near wing margin; R 5 ending at or slightly beyond wing tip; radial fork acute. Halter pale, yellowish brown.
Abdomen dark, shiny, without pruinescence, reddish brown with pale, golden setae, especially longer laterally. Pregenital segments modified: tergite 6 desclerotized medially in broad X-shape pattern along posterior margin; tergite 7 with anterior two-thirds thinly sclerotized medially with small, rounded lateral lobe, clothed in pruinescence ( Fig. 243 View FIGURES 243–248 ); sclerites of segment 8 narrowly fused anterolaterally. Terminalia ( Figs 244, 245 View FIGURES 243–248 ): shiny, dark reddish brown with hypandrium and phallus paler; anterolateral corner of epandrium with thin pruinescence. Cercus linear, truncate apically, shorter than epandrium; setae shorter than width of cercus. Subepandrial process broad basally, tapered to narrow, downcurved apex; extending to either side of phallus. Epandrial lamella subtriangular, tapered dorsolaterally to narrowed apex; broadly fused with cercus anteriorly; setae longer than cercal setae, mostly concentrated along posterior margin. Hypandrium short, truncate, several short setae basally. Phallus ( Fig. 245 View FIGURES 243–248 ) with expanded base, tapered apically, with strong bend on apical third; posterolateral margin expanded 4–5 teeth-like, marginal projections in posterior view; apex emerging beyond cercus; ejaculatory apodeme less than half-length of epandrium, T-shaped, with lateral apodemes near lower margin.
Female. Unknown.
Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 249 View FIGURES 249–250 ). Empis (En.) turgida sp. nov. is known from eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, western Idaho and northern California. Adults have been collected from May to July.
Etymology. The species name is Latin for swelling, in reference to the two membranous lateral lobes on tergite 7 in this species.
Nuptial gift presentation. Form unknown.
