Stems 20-30 cm, 2-3 mm in diameter, subangular. Leaves 2-5-15(-3O) x 0-5-3-5 cm, obovate to lanceolate-spathulate, mucronate, 3- to 5-veined, densely whitish-punctate above. Scales 9-12 mm. Spikes 10-13 mm, dense, with 8 spikelets per cm; spikelets 1- to 2-flowered. Bracts puberulent; inner bract 5- 5 mm, 3-fid, with narrow, hyaline margin, the mucros subequal; outer bract 5 mm, acute. Calyx 7 mm, hirsute; tube 1£ times as long as the limb; lobes 1-5 mm, longer than wide. Corolla reddish-purple. S.E. Europe, from S. Jugoslavia to W. Kazakhstan, and extending northwards to 51° N. in S.C. Russia. Bu Gr Ju Rm Rs (C, W, E) [Hu].
