Notes:— Pedicularis gracilis was described by Bentham (1835) based on the specimens of Wallich from Gossain Than, Nepal and Royle from Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India. Pennell (1943) cited type as “ Wallich 413” at K, however he did not specify which particular herbarium specimen at K was the type as there are three herbarium sheets of Wallich 413 (K000739044, K000739045 and K001109989). According to Art. 9.17 of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018), Pennell’s type citation must be accepted as the first-step lectotypification. The type citation of Pennell can be further narrowed to a single specimen by second-step lectotypification. Therefore, from the three specimens of Wallich cat. n. 413 at K, the best preserved specimen K000739044 from herbarium Benthamianum, is designated here as the second-step lectotype for the name P. gracilis Wall. ex Benth. The date 1829 mentioned on the sheet K000739044, is the date of inclusion of this specimen in the Wallich catalogue ( Wallich cat. n. 413.2), not the year of collection.
