This species is economically very important crop and has its wild populations in the moist afro-montane forests of Ethiopia. This species was assessed for inclusion in the IUCN red list of Threatened species in 20 1 8. It has been assessed as Endangered (EN) 6 under criteria A3b. The latter means population reduction projected inferred or suspected to be met in the future (up to a maximum of 1 00 years) based on an index of abundance for this species. Deforestation, climate change, diseases and pests are the major threats.
