Type species. Scython gabonensis Fleutiaux, 1896 .
Diagnosis. Apical margin of frontoclypeal region feebly trilobed and less than twice as wide as the distance between antennal sockets; prothoracic hypomera with posteriorly open, medially undefined lateral antennal grooves either deep or shallow in depth; male prothoracic tarsomere I simple, with sex combs; metathoracic coxal plates medially 3.0–6.0 times wider than laterally; last abdominal ventrite strongly produced; pretarsal claws toothed basally; lateral surfaces of mesothoracic and metathoracic tibiae either with setae and transverse rows of spine combs or with setae and irregularly placed spines ( Otto 2016).
Diversity. This is a small group consisting of 13 species. Six described species are present from Gabon east to Somalia, south to South Africa and Madagascar, and two species are represented in continental southern Asia: Macroscython coomani Fleutiaux and M. granulosus . Specimens of an additional five undescribed species are known from in the broader Indo-Australian region.
