Phyllophaga (Cnemarachis) holguinensis Smith and Paulsen View in CoL , new species
( Figs. 15–18 View Figs )
Type Series. Holotype, allotype, 77 paratypes. 12 males (6 CMNC [including holotype], 5 UNSM, 1 USNM), 3 females (1 CMNC [allotype], 2 UNSM) labeled: “ CUBA: Holguín Prov. / Parque Nacional La Mensura GoogleMaps / mixed pine forest / 20.52722°N, 75.76699°W / 736 m; MV lights; 11-V-2013 / A.B.T. Smith, F.Cala-Riquelme ”. 16 males (8 CMNC, 8 UNSM), 12 females (6 CMNC, 4 UNSM, 2 USNM) labeled: “ CUBA: Holguín Prov. / Parque Nacional La Mensura GoogleMaps / mixed pine forest, 716 m / 20.48275°N, 75.80745°W / 12-V-2013; A.B.T. Smith, / A.Deler-Hernández, G.Zhang ”. 28 males (11 CMNC, 1 FSCA, 1 IESH, 1 MNHC, 12 UNSM, 2 USNM), 8 females (1 CMNC, 1 FSCA, 1 IESH, 1 MNHC, 3 UNSM, 1 USNM) labeled: “ CUBA: Holguín Prov. / Parque Nacional La Mensura GoogleMaps / 20.48275°N, 75.80745°W / 716 m; MV lights; 10-V-2013 / A.B.T.Smith, F.Cala-Riquelme ”.
Diagnosis. Dorsal surface shiny, without pruinosity ( Fig. 15 View Figs ); clypeus weakly sinuate; antennal club much shorter than funicle and scape; pronotal lateral margin entire; prosternum with obtuse projection basal to procoxae; metasternum setose; abdominal sternites shiny, without pruinosity, with some scattered setae; pygidium disc glabrous; male genitalia distinct as in Figs. 16–17 View Figs .
Holotype Description. Length 16 mm, width 8 mm. Dorsal surface shiny, without pruinosity; head dark reddish brown, pronotum light reddish brown except tan along lateral margins, elytra tan ( Fig. 15 View Figs ). Head: Surface moderately to densely punctate with deep, well-defined punctures; glabrous. Clypeus with apex weakly reflexed, weakly sinuate with middle slightly shorter than sides; densely punctate. Frontoclypeal suture well defined, clypeus and frons on same plane. Frons moderately to densely punctate. Antennae with 9 antennomeres; club approximately half length of funicle and scape; club slightly dull and funicle and scape shiny. Pronotum: Surface moderately to densely punctate with deep, well-defined punctures; glabrous. Apical angles weakly acute; lateral margins entire (not crenulate), widest at medial point. Elytra: Surface moderately to densely punctate with shallow, well-defined punctures; appearing largely glabrous but with some scattered setae. Striae poorly defined, obscure. Legs: Protibia with 3 teeth, 2 nd tooth distinctly closer to apical tooth, 3 rd tooth reduced. Meso- and metatibia without medial carinae, with spines on lateral margin. Metatibial spurs unmodified, shorter spur at most 2/3 length of longer spur. Claws symmetrical with medial triangular tooth, apex unmodified. Venter: Prosternum with small, obtuse projection behind procoxae. Metasternum setose with long setae, without pruinosity. Abdominal sternites shiny without pruinosity, surface with scattered setae. Pygidium: Surface convex; densely punctate with large, well-defined punctures; glabrous except with scattered setae apically and along lateral margins; shiny without pruinosity; color tan. Male genitalia: As in Figs. 16–17 View Figs .
Variation. Male length 16–18 mm, width 8–9 mm; female length 17–19 mm, width 8–9 mm. Terminal abdominal segment longer and more inflated in females than in males.
Etymology. This species is named for the province of Holguín, where the type series was collected.
Distribution ( Fig. 18 View Figs ). CUBA: Holguín: Parque Nacional Mensura-Piloto, 20.52722°N, 75.76699°W (15); Parque Nacional Mensura- Piloto, 20.48275°N, 75.80745°W (64).
Temporal Data. May (79).
Remarks. This species does not effectively key past couplet 10 in Chapin (1932) and does not match the description or genitalic illustrations of P. baracoana or any species resolved after this point in the key.
