Phyllophaga (Cnemarachis) secessicola Smith and Paulsen View in CoL , new species
( Figs. 23–27 View Figs )
Type Series. Holotype, allotype, 18 paratypes. 15 males (6 CMNC [including holotype], 1 MNHC, 7 UNSM, 1 USNM), 5 females (2 CMNC [including allotype], 1 MNHC, 1 UNSM, 1 USNM) labeled: “ CUBA: Camagüey Prov. / Reserva Ecológica Limones-Tuabaquey GoogleMaps ; canyon trail / 21.59214°N, 77.78833°W / 98 m; MV lights; 16-V-2013 / A.B.T. Smith, A.Deler-Hernández ”.
Diagnosis. Dorsal surface shiny, glabrous, without pruinosity ( Fig. 23 View Figs ); clypeus slightly sinuate; antennal club approximately equal in length to antennomeres 2–6; pronotal lateral margin entire; prosternum with two spines basal to procoxae; metasternum setose; abdominal sternites shiny, without pruinosity; pygidium disc glabrous; male genitalia distinct as in Figs. 24–25 View Figs .
Holotype Description. Length 13 mm,width 6 mm. Dorsal surface shiny, brown without pruinosity ( Fig. 23 View Figs ). Head: Surface densely punctate with deep, well-defined punctures; glabrous. Clypeus with apex reflexed, sinuate with middle slightly shorter than sides. Frontoclypeal suture welldefined, clypeus and frons in same plane. Frons with longitudinally elongate punctures giving a striate appearance. Antennae with 9 antennomeres; club dull with strong microsculpture, approximately equal in length to antennomeres 2–6; funicle and scape shiny. Pronotum: Surface moderately punctate with deep, well-defined punctures; glabrous. Apical angles moderately acute; lateral margins entire (not crenulate), widest slightly apical to medial point. Elytra: Surface moderately to densely punctate with deep, well-defined punctures; largely glabrous but with row of setae laterally along epipleuron. Striae obscure. Legs: Protibia with 3 teeth, 2 nd tooth slightly closer to apical tooth. Meso- and metatibia without medial carinae, with spines on lateral margin. Metatibial spurs unmodified, shorter spur approximately 2/3 length of longer spur. Claws symmetrical with medial triangular tooth, apex unmodified. Venter: Prosternum with 2 small spines behind procoxae. Metasternum shiny, setose, without pruinosity. Abdominal sternites shiny with some scattered setae, without pruinosity. Pygidium: Surface moderately punctate with large, well-defined punctures; glabrous; shiny without pruinosity; convex. Male genitalia: As in Figs. 24–25 View Figs .
Variation. Male length 12–14 mm, width 6–7 mm; female length 13–14 mm, width 7 mm. Terminal abdominal segment longer and more inflated in females than in males. Female genitalia are illustrated in Fig. 26 View Figs .
Etymology. This species is named for the habitat where the type series was collected – secessicola approximates “ravine dweller” in Latin. This name is a noun in apposition.
Distribution ( Fig. 27 View Figs ). CUBA: Camagüey: Reserva Ecológica Limones-Tuabaquey, canyon trail, 21.59214°N, 77.78833°W (20).
Temporal Data. May (20).
Remarks. This species keys to couplet 19 in Chapin (1932) but does not match the description or genitalic illustrations of either Phyllophaga cubana Chapin or P. patruelis .
