TYPE SPECIES: Neotoma alleni Merriam, 1892 .

COMMENTS: Neotomine. Maintained as a genus (e.g., Goldman, 1910; Ellerman, 1941) until arranged as a subgenus of Neotoma by Burt and Barkalow (1942). Carleton (1980) expressed relationships and differentiation of Hodomys at the generic rank, perhaps closely related to Xenomys (also see Carleton, 1973; Hooper, 1960; and Schaldach, 1960).
