Nipponentomon aureitarsum ( Ewing, 1940) View in CoL
( Figs. 12–23 View FIGURES 12–23 , Table 2 View TABLE 2 )
= Acerentulus aureitarsus Ewing, 1940
Material examined. Holotype, maturus junior (no. 53373) from Difficult Run , Virginia, 4.IX.1938, coll. H.E. Ewing; one maturus junior from near Prospect Hill , Va., 25.IX.1921, coll. H.E. Ewing.
Remarks. The species was redescribed by Bonet & Tuxen (1960) and by Tuxen (1964) on the basis of four specimens, one of them a female. I saw only two maturi juniores. Some features, which are not included in previous redescriptions, are added here.
Additional description. Labium not protruded ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Head dorsally with a pair of short, stout and blunt setae sd5 ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12–23 ), setae near pseudoculus l3 and sd4 longer and setiform ( Figs. 13 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Additional cephalic setae d6 absent. Marginal cephalic setae d7 and sd7 equal in length ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Labial palp with tuft of setae, three setae and broad sensillum ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Setae β1 and δ4 on foretarsus modified: β1 short, stout and truncated at the tip, δ4 sensilliform, longer and thinner than β1, but shorter than δ5 seta ( Figs. 17, 18 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Length ratio of P1: P1a: P2 on mesonotum as 7.0:1.0:9.0. Accessory setae P1a and P2a on nota and all accessory setae on tergites I–VI and sternites IV–VI short, stumpy, truncated on the tip ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 12–23 ); on tergite and sternite VII accessory setae setiform ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Setae A2 on prosternum and A1 on metasternum absent but may appear in adults. All setae on thoracic sterna and on sternites I–II setiform. Meso- and metanota with pores al and sl. Meso- and metasterna with one median pore (sam). Pores psm present on tergites I–VII ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 12–23 ), psl on tergites V–VII, al on tergites II–VI, but absent on tergite VII ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Sternites IV–VII with sam pore ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 12–23 ). Sternites VIII–X with a pore (sc) in the central region.
Body measurements (maturus junior, in μm): body length 1400, head 150, pseudoculus 8, distal part of maxillary gland 25, pronotal seta 1 56, pronotal seta 2 20, mesonotal P1 52, mesonotal P1 a 8, mesonotal P2 59, mesonotal P2 a 8; foretarsus 96, claw 35, empodial appendage 5.
