General distribution. It is a very widespread and variable species which distribution embraces the Palaearctic, Afrotropical, and Oriental Regions; in the western Palearctic occurs mainly in the Mediterranean area ( Cianferoni & Terzani 2013; see Polhemus 1995b and Kment et al. 2020) .

Remarks. Only a single old record based on material collected in 1904 by Johan Reinhold Sahlberg and published by Lindberg (1922); then it has been quoted by subsequent authors (see above). This record should be confirmed also considering the enigmatic species Ochterus strigicollis Horváth, 1913 described and known only from the adjacent Israel, which should be further investigated (see Kment et al. 2020).

The subspecies Ochterus marginatus insularis Rieger, 1977 is known from the Philippines and maybe Indonesia (see Kment et al. 2020).
