Cryptocephalus ( Cryptocephalus) perelegans Baly, 1873

[Japanese name: Kiboshi-tsutsu-hamushi]

( Figures 2A, B View FIGURE 2 )

Cryptocephalus perelegans Baly, 1873: 88 [ type locality: Nagasaki, Japan].

Cryptocephalus weberi Bodemeyer, 1916: 112 [ type locality: Kobe , Japan].

Cryptocephalus takahashii Chûjô, 1935 , 73 [ type locality: Miyako-jima Is., Japan].

Materials examined. Japan. Kyushu: [ Miyazaki Pref.] 1 ♀, Kunitomi-chô, Fukadoshi , 27. VI .2025 , H. Shigetoh leg. ( HIPC). The Ôsumi Isls. [ Tanegashima Is.] 1 ex., Minamitane-chô, Hirayama , 20. IV.2024, T. Saeki leg. ( HIPC). [ Yaku-shima Is.] 2 ♂, Yakushima-chô, Funayuki , 24. V.2024, T. Saeki leg. ( HIPC).

Distribution. Japan (Honshu to the Ryukyu Isls.), China & Taiwan ( Takizawa, 2007, Lopatin et al., 2010; Schöller, 2024).

Food plants. Alnus spp. ( Betulaceae ), Castanea crenata Siebold et Zucc. , Castanopsis spp. , Lithocarpus edulis (Makino) Nakai , Quercus serrata Murray ( Fagaceae ), Amorpha fruticosa L., Lespedeza cyrtobotrya Miq. ( Fabaceae ), Phyllanthus sieboldianus T. Kuros. ( Phyllanthaceae ), Fallopia japonica (Houtt.) Ronse Decr. ( Polygonaceae ), Ardisia sieboldii Miq. ( Primulaceae ), Acer itoanum (Hayata) H. L. Li ( Sapindaceae ) ( Suzuki & Minami, 2018); Taxillus yadoriki ( Loranthaceae )—this study.

Remarks. This is a new food plant record for C. ( C.) p. perelegans . The adult feeds on the leaves scraping the edges as same as C. (C.) tsutsumiuchii sp. nov. This species has diverse color variations depending on the regions, and some populations were classified as the subspecies and forms ( Chûjô, 1954; Nakane, 1963; Kimoto, 1974). Careful study using morphological and molecular analysis is needed to clarify an interspecific status of this species.
