Genus Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 View in CoL
Type species. Melolontha candida Olivier, 1789 View in CoL by subsequent designation ( Medvedev 1951: 231).
Etymology. The name is derived from the Greek words χιϕο=divided, χειλο = labrum.
Diagnosis. The following combination of characters distinguishes Cyphochilus from other closely related genera within the Melolonthinae : elytra densely covered with uniformly distributed scales; the apical segment of the maxillary palpi elongated and narrow, lacking any callus or excavation on its outer surface; a strongly asymmetric labrum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–2 ); a lateral margin of the prothorax with a regular curvature; long claws with a broad base; and highly asymmetric parameres in most species.
