Redescription. Forewings 1.9 times longer than wide, length: male 3.8–5.1 mm (mean = 4.6, n= 11), female 3.9– 4.4 mm (mean = 4.1, n= 8). Colour stramineous to light brown, some specimens tinted with green; margins of facial carinae, rostrum, middle of pronotum and tibiae may be tinted with orange. Forewings white, powdered; a black mark, of variable shape, near hind margin distad of clavus; apical cross-veins may be lined with infuscation. Facial carinae well separated; subantennal processes and lateral carinae of pronotum well developed; antennae small, ellipsoid, just reaching lower margin of eyes; rostrum reaching abdomen. Forewings with Sc+R fork near or just before its middle; Ms1a touching Cu1. Male genitalia with two long lateral processes on anal segment. Genital styles truncated apically; proximal dorsal process small, its pointed tip curved inwards; base of distal dorsal process wide, nearly rectangular, apical part turned outwards; at the inside near the base a finger-like process bearing bristles at the tip. Apical part of aedeagus elongated, flat, at the apex extended on the left side; on the right side bearing two small dorsal lobes.

Etymology. Derived from Amboina (the old name for the Indonesian island of Ambon), the latinized species name ( amboinensis , -ensis, -ense) is an adjective.

Type material. Dichotropis amboinensis , lectotype ♂ (designated by Zelazny 1981: 263) (forewing 3.8 mm), INDONESIA: Ambon Isl.; labels: 1) Amboina/ F. Muir 2) TYPE OF / Dichotropis 3) TYPE OF / D. amboinensis / Muir 4) Decora / amboinensis/ Kirk. 5) 589 ( BPBM #5149). Decora vettius , holotype, ♂ (forewing 4.5 mm), PAPUA NEW GUINEA; labels: 1) Papua: Kokoda, 1,200 ft. viii 1933. L.E. Cheesman. B.M. 1933-427 ( BMNH).

Note. Muir described this species from 4 specimens, a male and a female from Ambon I. ( Indonesia), a male from Larat I. ( Indonesia, near Tanimbar) and a female from Laloki (apparently near Port Moresby in Papua and New Guinea). The BPBM contains only the ♂ from Ambon .

Distribution. Philippine Isl. ( Zelazny, 1981), Indonesia ( Maluku), New Guinea, New Britain, New Ireland, Solomon Isl., Australia ( Northern Territory).

Diagnosis. Dichotropis amboinensis is characterized by the black mark on the forewings and the simple apical part of the male aedeagus.
