Serica capensis Brenske, 1902: 26 View in CoL .
Type material examined: Lectotype (here designated). ♂ ‘ Cap b. sp. Coll Chevr. / Coll. Brenske / Serica capensis Typ. Brsk. ’ ( ZMHB) . Paralectotype: 1 ♂ ‘CT [Cape Town ] 1885/ v. Peringuey/ Caloserica capicola co-type P[éringue]y’ ( ZMHB) .
Additional material examined: 1 ♂ ‘Kimberley Bro. Power 1912/ SAM COL A070308’ ( SAMC, record doubtful) .
Diagnostic description: Body length: 8.77 mm, elytral length: 6.35 mm, maximum width: 4.62 mm. Labroclypeus narrow and long; not incised or narrowed behind labrum. Anterior margin of labroclypeus medially weakly sinuate. Angle between lateral margin of labroclypeus and ocular canthus indistinct. Eyes, ratio diameter/interocular width: 0.37. Antennal club shorter than remaining antennomeres combined. Mentum convexly elevated and slightly flattened anteriorly. Basal marginal line of pronotum present. Marginal line of anterior margin of pronotum medially narrowly interrupted. Hind wings reduced in length. Epipleural edge reduced behind anterior half of elytra. Metasternum and metepisernites in length reduced. Ratio of length of metepisternum/metacoxa:1/2.Protibia, externally tridentate; external margin between apical two teeth moderately sinuated. Metacoxa glabrous except a few fine lateral setae; its anterior marginal line complete. Metatibia, ratio of width/length: 1/3.5. Basal group of dorsal spines of metatibia before basal quarter of metatibial length; apical group of external spines about at half of metatibial length. Apex of metatibia interiorly near tarsal articulation concavely sinuate; apical face simple, not elevated or produced. Meso- and metatarsomeres dorsally punctate. Mesotarsomere 1 slightly longer than the subsequent tarsomere. Aedeagus and habitus: Fig. 7C.
Remark: Paralectotype doubtful; it does not bear Brenske’s labels. The name on its labels Caloserica capiloa is a nomen nudum. The additional specimen from Kimberly probably bears an erroneous locality label. The species is so far only strictly known from the Cape, but no recent records are known.
