Taxonomic notes:— The geographic distribution and morphology of the plate for Polygala disperma View in CoL matches the species better known as Bredemeyera autranii View in CoL . Since Polygala disperma View in CoL is the older name for this species, a new combination is here proposed. This species is closely related to B. laurifolia View in CoL (Saint-Hilaire & Moquin- Tandon 1828: 56) Klotzsch ex Bennett (1874: 52) (which might include also B. velutina Bennett (1874: 53) View in CoL as a synonym). However, B. laurifolia View in CoL has pubescent leaves (more conspicuous on the abaxial surface) and occurs mostly in open savanna vegetation ( Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Bahia), whereas B. disperma View in CoL occurs in the Atlantic Forest. Bredemeyera disperma View in CoL is also closely related to B. hebeclada ( De Candolle 1824: 341) J.F.B. Pastore (2010: 314) View in CoL (which undoubtedly includes B. kunthiana ( Saint-Hilaire & Moquin-Tandon 1828:56) Klotzsch ex Bennett (1874: 53) View in CoL as a synonym), but it can be distinguished by leaves even smaller than in B. hebeclada View in CoL .
