Melitaea phoebe gerinia Fruhstorfer, 1917 View in CoL
[TL: Portugal, Lissabon {Lisbon}]; BERNARDI & DE LESSE (1951: 141) reported that there were no specimens of this subspecies in Fruhstorfer’s collection in MNHNP. However, Rodolphe Rougeri found a male specimen there. From photographs of the underside it can be concluded that, despite the somewhat triangular shape of the submarginal black markings, they touched the intervening veins, the antennal tips were club shaped and not spatulate and the forewing apices appeared more acute than rounded. This specimen is correctly identified as M. phoebe , as described by Fruhstorfer and in agreement with VAN OORSCHOT & COUTSIS (2014: 61) and RUSSELL & TENNENT (2016: note 39).
