Discussion Otoliths of Pagellus bellottii are characterized by a relatively high body and pronounced mid- und postdorsal angles (see Lombarte et al., 2006 for figures of extant otoliths). Tey resemble P. erythrinus but are more compressed. Today, Pagellus bellottii occurs from the Strait of Gibraltar to Angola ( Froese & Pauly, 2022). Its occurrence in the Mediterranean is considered to represent a recent immigration through the Strait of Gibraltar ( Golani et al., 2021).
