Discussion Two relatively small (4.5 mm in length) and slender otoliths (OL:OH = 1.75) are interpreted to represent S. smaris . Tey are further characterized by a low curvature of the inner face and a nearly straight caudal tip. For figures of extant otoliths of Spicara otoliths see Nolf et al. (2009). Spicara smaris occurs today in the Mediterranean and adjacent region of the northeast Atlantic.
