Carlarius cf. latiscutatus (Günther, 1864) View in CoL
Figure 11f View Fig
Material 2 specimens, SMF PO 101.192 , Dar bel Hamri, Zanclean .
Discussion Te two, large, and thick otoliths of 11.4 and 12.4 mm in length resemble closely the extant specimen figured by Veen and Hoedemakers (2005; pl. 2, Fig. 2 View Fig ). Te outline of the otolith and its proportions match well, but Veen & Hoedemakers did not figure the ventral face with the diagnostic sulcus-like mesial depression and the mesial inward curve (terminology of Ohe in Aguilera et al., 2013). In the case of the specimen from Morocco, this inward curve is relatively long and narrow and only slightly inclined, which would probably represent a distinctive feature. Terefore, this specimen is only tentatively placed in C. latiscutatus . Today, C. latiscutatus occurs south of the northwest African upwelling system from Senegal to Angola.
