Material examined. PORTUGAL: 1♂, Porto, Porto, MNHN-AR9951 ; 1♀, Vila do Conde, Vila do Conde , MNHN-AR9951 ; 1♂, Barros , Braga, 41.518°N, 8.417°W, 220 m a.s.l., 3. VI GoogleMaps .2018, D. SPAIN: 1♀, together with paralectotype of Z. diatretum Denis 1935 , labeled as “Cartagena, Alicante”, MNHN-AR1513 .
Diagnosis: Males of Z. machadoi can be distinguished from other members of the rubidum group by a unique combination of characters, including an elongated, voluminous embolus ( Fig. 14N View FIGURE 14 ), and a bladder-shaped tibial apophysis with a ventral hump visible in the retrolateral view ( Fig. 14O View FIGURE 14 ). Females can be distinguished from the closely related Z. atlanticum by a longer septum (vs. short; cf. Fig. 17F View FIGURE 17 and Fig. 17B View FIGURE 17 ).
Description: For a detailed description of the habitus and male palp, refer to Bosmans (1994). Epigyne ( Fig. 17F View FIGURE 17 ): Epigynal plate sub-trapezoidal, posteriorly widened, anteriorly limited by an antero-median chitinous ridge, which accompanied by a wedge-shaped structure. Epigynal plate with a longitudinal septum, reaching the posterior part of the epigynal plate. Sides of the epigynal plate S-shaped. Epigyne with a pair of copulatory openings on antero-lateral sides of the septum; these copulatory openings linked to a pair of lateral pits by shallow, connecting grooves.
Molecular data:
COI mitochondrial barcodes (Genbank accession): PP373371.
Minimum interspecific divergence (to Z. fuscum ): 5.9%. Consensus COI distance to the closest species (to Z. styliferum ): 3.5%.
Distribution: Although this species has been reported from Portugal, Spain and Azores, the endemic nature of Iberian Zodarion species suggests that the single records of Z. machadoi from Spain and the Azores are most likely due to mislabeling and misidentification, respectively.
