Diagnosis: Zodarion algarvense can be distinguished from other species within the styliferum group by its straight tibial apophysis with truncated tip, visible in the ventral view ( Fig. 34B View FIGURE 34 ), and a bell-shaped epigyne, which has a shallow copulatory opening at the anterior ( Figs 38B View FIGURE 38 , 41A View FIGURE 41 ).

Description: For a detailed description of the habitus and male palp, refer to Bosmans (1994). Epigyne ( Fig. 41A View FIGURE 41 ): Epigynal plate more or less bell-shaped, anteriorly semi-circular, laterally slightly widened. Epigyne anteriorly with a shallow, large copulatory opening and postero-laterally accompanied by a pair of small pits.

Molecular data:

COI mitochondrial barcode (Genbank accession): PP373357

Minimum interspecific divergence : 5.9% (to Z. gregua ). Minimum COI distance to consensus of closest species: 2.8% (to Z. styliferum ).

Comment: The specimens from western Alentejo (Praia da Fonte do Cortiço Beach and Lagoa da Sancha), display similar copulatory organs ( Figs 34A–C View FIGURE 34 , 41A View FIGURE 41 ) as the types of Z. algarvense —female paratype examined ( Figs 38B View FIGURE 38 , 39B View FIGURE 39 ) and male drawings available from Bosmans (1994: figs 10–12). However, these new specimens differ markedly in color by having a dark brown carapace, sternum, femora, coxae I–II, and venter of abdomen ( Fig. 19C–F View FIGURE 19 ) than those from the type locality ( Fig. 19A–B View FIGURE 19 ). A deeper study is needed to find whether these differences represent polymorphism or different species.

Distribution: Three localities on the western and southern coasts of the Algarve region, in southern Portugal.
