ZACALANTICA IREDALE, 1929 View in CoL
Z a c a l a n t i c a I r e d a l e, 1 9 2 9: 2 7 5. T y p e s p e c i e s: Phenacolepas linguaviverrae Melvill & Standen, 1899: 179 ; pl. 10, fig. 11 (Torres Strait; holotype BMNH 1899.2.23.9), by original designation.
Amapileus Iredale, 1929: 275 View in CoL . Type species: Amapileus immeritus Iredale, 1929: 275 View in CoL ; pl. 31, fig. 8 (Michaelmas Cay, Queensland, Australia; holotype AMS 057836) [a junior synonym of Phenacolepas laevicostalis Thiele, 1909: 31 View in CoL ; pl. 5, figs 7, 8 (no locality; four syntypes BMNH)], by original designation.
Paraseptaria Risbec, 1942: 36. Type species: Septaria (Paraseptaria) parva Risbec, 1942: 37 View in CoL ; figs 1–3 (Nouville, New Caledonia; type unknown) [a probable junior synonym of Phenacolepas tenuisculpta Thiele, 1909: 37 View in CoL ; pl. 6, fig. 10, 11 ( Fiji; holotype or a syntype ZMB 108568)], by original designation.
Remarks: Zacalantica Iredale, 1929 is herein designated to have a priority over the simultaneously proposed Amapileus Iredale, 1929 (new synonymy by first reviser’s choice: ICZN Article 24.2). The type species of the former genus, ‘ Phenacolepas ’ linguaviverrae Melvill & Standen, 1899 , and closely resembling ‘ Phenacolepas ’ senta Hedley, 1899 , have such unique conchological traits as an overhanging posterior apex, a surface sculpture in ‘quincunx’ order, and a crenulated rim of the aperture (see Hedley, 1899: fig. 1). This enables an unambiguous characterization of Zacalantica in the framework of combined nomenclatural, morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies ( Figs 1, 5D). Most species in Phenacolepadinae , especially smallto medium-sized ones, belong to this genus (see Fig. 5C–F). The ventral side of the shell sometimes has a keel along the posterior half of the apertural rim, e.g. in Z. unguiformis (Gould, 1859) , but this keel does not bear denticles as in the species of Plesiothyreus . Feminine.
