Gyromastix limax Doweld , sp. nov.
≡ Gyromitus limax Swale & Belcher, Arch. Protistenk. 117: 20–21. 1975, nom. inval. [ICBN] (nom. unavail.). [ICZN] ≡ Peregrinia limax (Swale & Belcher) Cavalier-Smith, 2011 , comb. inval. & nom. unavail. [ICZN, ICBN]
Diagnosis: see Swale & Belcher (1975: 20–21).
Holotype: (iconotype) Swale & Belcher (1975: pl. 1–3).
Note: Since Gyromitus limax was originally published as a botanical taxon [ICBN, Turland et al., 2018], the rules of botanical nomenclature were applied to the nomenclature of the flagellate microorganism. Authors unhappily did not designate the necessitated holotype of the species, required by the Botanical Code from 1958, and hence the species was not validly published (ICBN, now ICN, Art. 40.1). When Cavalier-Smith (2011) recombined the species in Peregrinia , the invalid basionym name was formally recombined as Peregrinia with no rectifying actions as to its invalid nomenclatural status. Herewith the species is validated to conform to the rules of both ICN and ICZN to allow its acceptance and valid/ available use as an ambiregnal microorganism.
