Etymology: From Greek γύρος (gýros), from the turning of the meat on a spit, and Greek μάστιξ (mastix), for the whip form (scourge).
Type species: Gyromastix clavideferens (Howe, Arndt & Cavalier-Smith) Doweld , comb. nov. ≡ Peregrinia clavideferens Howe, Arndt & Cavalier-Smith, 2011 .
