Material examined. BHUTAN: 3♂, Gaylegphu ex pupae ex bean stem, 17.xi.1988, C. Dorji. INDONESIA: 1♂, 1♀, Sulawesi Utara, Dumoga Irrigation Project, Toraut , 10–19.viii.1985, A.H. Kirk-Spriggs, K.A. Spencer det. ( NMWC). OMAN: 1♂, 1♀, Batina , on field beans, 6.xii.1992, J.C. Deeming; 1♀, Hayl al Ghaf , weedy cultivation under palms, 6.xi.1992, M.D. Gallager & J.C. Deeming. SRI LANKA: 1♂, Uva Province near Udawalawa , at light, 29–31.iii.2000, M.R. Wilson.

Distribution. Previously recorded from Saudi Arabia by Dabbour & Hammad (1982) (as Agromyza phaseoli Coquillett ). It was described from Australia and was further recorded from the Afrotropical Region: Burundi, Cape Verde Islands, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Oman, Réunion, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Australasian Region: Australia, Fiji, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau (Caroline Island) Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, USA (Hawaii: Introduced): Palaearctic Region; Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan: Oriental Region; Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia (Java), Japan (Ryukus), Laos, Malaysia (Peninsula), Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam ( Waterhouse 1998; Nickel 1979; Deeming 2006; Chanty 2010; Černý & von Tschirnhaus 2014; Sasakawa 2015; Shi et al. 2015; Lonsdale et al. 2023). Spencer (1973a: 66) reported that this species is less prevalent in Africa than in Asian localities in Java and India.

Remarks. Detailed information on the taxonomy, biology, distribution, host plants, damage caused and parasitoids attacking this species is given in Spencer (1973a: 61–68) and Lonsdale et al. (2023). Ophiomyia phaseoli is considered to be one of the most serious of all known Agromyzid pests. The larva spends the first two days in the leaf and then migrates into the stem and tap root to be an external, rather than internal, stem feeder. Recently Lonsdale et al. (2023) listed a wide range of leguminous plants ( Fabaceae ) which are attacked by O. phaseoli .
