Genus - Cedusa Fowler, 1904
Species - Cedusa vulgaris (Fitch, 1851)
General overview of the genus, Cedusa
The Derbid planthopper genus, Cedusa , is represented by more than 170 species, mostly from North,South America. Insects with the same appearance and morphology are also found in Africa, but it is found to be a different genus, Malenia . Both genera can be differentiated by the following morphological characters given in Table
2. These planthoppers are often suspected to be vectors of phytoplasma causing disease to plants, a prominent example is “ Candidatus phytoplasma palmae ”, which is found to be transmitted to Malayan dwarf coconut trees in Jamaica by Cedusa spp ( Brown et al., 2006). However, the species remains unidentified. A list of host plants associated with the Derbidae genera is given in Table 3. We noticed a moderate level of adult population in the grapes feeding sap of leaves. Symptoms of feeding in leaves are described ( Fig. 2 View Fig ). Adults are usually found during the months of June-August. Maximum population is found in June and July ( Bartlett et al., 2011).
