Geraldus cambrensis Fitton, 1987 View in CoL

( Figure 1 View Figure 1 )

For comparison with Geraldus fittoni sp. nov., which is described below, G. cambrensis is briefly re-described here.

Female

Fore wing length 7.0– 7.3 mm; areolet pointed dorsally, roughly rhombic but with first abscissa of M slightly shorter than second abscissa; vein cu-a separated from vein Rs&M by 0.4 times length of cu-a; hind wing with abscissa of vein Cu 1 between M+Cu and cu-a 0.17 times as long as cu-a. Clypeus basally convex, ridge-like, then abruptly flattened, with apex notched ( Figure 2A View Figure 2 ). Antennal scrobes deep and shining with some carinulae near antennal base; antenna stouter than in G. fittoni sp. nov., first flagellomere 4.7 times as long as broad. Head with temples narrowed behind eye, shorter than length of eye in dorsal view. Legs with spiny tibiae, hind tarsus also spiny; all tarsal claws with subapical accessory tooth ( Figure 2C View Figure 2 ); hind leg very long (slightly longer than body), with large, robust hind coxa (as long as first metasomal tergite); inner hind tibial spur long, 0.6 times length of basitarsus, outer spur 0.4 times as long as basitarsus. Head and thorax regularly punctate; meoscutum with shallow notauli, extending back to level of front edge of tegula; propleurum with posteriorly directed lobe; mesopleurum with epicnemial carina not quite reaching front edge of mesopleurum, sternaulus present on posterior half of mesopleurum; propodeum strongly rugose, with longitudinal striation posteromedially; submetapleural carina complete, strongly produced anteriorly as a lobe; pleural carina complete, posterior transverse carina present laterally; propodeal spiracle elongate. Metasoma mostly impunctate, shining; first tergite lacking carinae, sub-basally raised, with spiracle at basal 0.4 and glymma deep and basal; sclerotized part of first sternite reaching 0.2 times length of tergite; laterotergites large, coriaceous, colourless, overlapping ventrally; metasoma rather stout, sixth and seventh tergites transverse, eighth tergite not visible dorsally, ovipositor sheaths not projecting beyond metasoma apex.

Colour. Black, with the following parts yellow: annulus on middle of antenna (covering five to eight flagellomeres), sub-basal patch on mandible, clypeus (except basal ridge), vertical stripes along inner and outer orbits, fore leg from trochantellus to tarsus, midleg from femur to tarsus and inner surface of trochantellus, hind leg on basal 0.4 of hind tibia and third to fifth hind tarsomeres, and ovipositor sheaths. Patch in middle of mandible and tegula red, first metasomal tergite black on basal fifth, remainder red with second and third tergites varying from entirely red to third and posterior half of second dorsally black. Wing membrane slightly infumate, venation dark brown/black.

Male

Unknown.

Material examined

In addition to the holotype female described by Fitton (1987), another four specimens, all female, are now known. Three were collected relatively recently in Argentina by Colin and Marta Vardy and the third was collected in Chile (only just over the border from Argentina) by the collectors of the holotype and was found in a drawer of unidentified Banchinae in BMNH .

Holotype female, Argentina, Terr. Rio Negro, L. Nahuel Huapi, Puerto Blest, 2–3 December 1926, F. and M. Edwards; two females, Argentina, Neuquén, 8 km north of San Martin de los Andes , 1000 m, 16–22 November 1997, Malaise trap, C. & M. Vardy; one female, same data but deposited in MACN; one female, Chile, Llanquihue prov. , Casa Pangue, 4–10 December 1926, F. and M. Edwards.
