Clivina caputdepressa sp. nov.

( Figs 12 View FIGURES 3–14 , 47 View FIGURES 38–52 , 82 View FIGURES 73–84 , 110 View FIGURES 110–128 )

Type material. Holotype: ♂, with labels and data: yellow, black printed “ PHILIPPINES: LEYTE SW Abuyog, 28.II.1991 river bank leg. SCHAWALLER & al.” / white, printed “ Clivina nr. wallacei PUTZ. det. Balkenohl II. 93” ( SMNS).

Paratypes: 1 ♂, 2 ♀♀, 12 specs, same data as holotype ( SMNS, CMBB) .

Remark. In one of the paratypes, an intermediate leg is missing.

Description. Measurements. Body length 4.59–5.19 mm (ẍ = 5.12 mm *), width 1.24–1.48 mm (ẍ = 1.39 mm *), ratio L/W of pronotum 0.97–0.99 (ẍ = 0.98*), ratio L/W of elytra 1.95–1.99 (ẍ = 1.98*); (*n = 4). Colour glossy, fuscous, with rufous tinge. Supraantennal plate, wing of clypeus, and apex of elytron slightly translucent. Antennae, mouthparts, intermediate and hind legs nearly of same colour as body.

Head a quarter narrower than pronotum.Clypeus with central part indistinctly excised, with indistinctly projecting rounded teeth laterally, separated from clypeal-wing by slight notch; wing wider than teeth of clypeus, obtuse-angled, not as projecting as clypeal-teeth, separated from supraantennal plate by obtuse-angled notch, supraantennal plate with margin laterally convex, clypeus reflexed margined. Supraantennal plate extended posteriorly into keel, separated from wing by narrow furrow. Clypeus transverse, moderately convex, smooth, clypeal-furrow flattened, more distinct laterally. Frons depressed, slightly hollowed out in posterior part, separated from supraantennal plate and supraorbital carina by distinct furrow, with clypeal seta in front; supraorbital carinae sharp anteriorly, obtuse posteriorly, with two supraorbital setigerous punctures at middle and end of gena-level. Neck constriction open at middle. Eye relatively small, somewhat flattened, gena distinct, enclosing eye posteriorly by one third. Antenna elongate, reaching distinctly over base of elytron. Labrum indistinctly excised anteriorly, finely isodiametrically reticulated, six-setose. Mentum with lobes pentagonal, finely margined, with irregular to isodiametric reticulation, median tooth nearly as high as lobe, hollowed out at tip, rectangular.

Pronotum ( Fig. 47 View FIGURES 38–52 ) with disk flattened in lateral view, flattened at middle and moderately convex laterally in frontal view. Shape cordate to square, as long as wide, seemingly longer than wide. Reflexed lateral margin sub-crenulate, slightly convex at middle, widest at middle; anterior angle distinct, posterior angle distinct, with distinct anteriorly projecting somewhat rounded tooth; lateral channel narrow, distinctly reticulated, continuing up to base as sharp, convex margin. Median line complete, engraved, joining anterior transverse line. Anterior transverse line distinct, complete. Disk in basal half with puncture pattern resembling to the Geek letter gamma, with transverse wrinkles, with isodiametric reticulation at base and laterally, with anterior setigerous puncture slightly removed from lateral channel, with posterior setigerous puncture removed from margin by diameter of pore. Lateral margin from posterior angle to flange of base slanted with angle of around 45°. Basal channel on flange regularly developed, somewhat rugose, with sharp carina.

Elytron ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 3–14 ) with disk flattened in anterior two thirds lateral view, flattened at middle and moderately convex in frontal view. Shape of elytra elongate, nearly two times longer than wide, with lateral margin straight anterior middle but slightly diverging, maximum width posterior middle. Humerus distinct, rounded. Reflexed lateral margin finely crenulate in anterior half. Lateral channel slightly narrower at middle. Row of setigerous punctures in the lateral channel somewhat distant at middle, scutellar striole distinct; setigerous tubercle at base of first stria distinct, with distinct tubercle at base of third interval, basal declivity falling perpendicularly to pedunculus, with isodiametric reticulation. Striae moderately deep, impunctate, one to four free at base, five and six joining at humerus, one and two, three and four, and five and six joining apically. Intervals slightly convex, interval three with four setigerous punctures joining third stria, interval five joining lateral margin at humerus as short carina, interval seven convex at apex, eight carinate at apex. Surface of interval one to six smooth, glossy, seven and eight as well as apex with isodiametric reticulation.

Hind wing fully developed.

Lower surface. Proepisternum isodiametrically reticulated, with fine wrinkles. Sternite of abdomen with isodiametric reticulation laterally, shingle-like at middle. Last visible sternite with the two marginal setigerous punctures widely separated, with moderately wide projection posteriorly at middle where it is slightly hollowed out, with narrow marginal furrow at middle (in both sexes).

Legs slender, protibia with fine longitudinal reticulation, with slight sulcus dorsally, with three acute spines and obtuse tooth, the frontal spine somewhat widened, movable spur moderately arcuate, basal tarsomere slender at base, carinate, with acute tubercle with two setae and small tubercle at middle of tarsomere. Intermediate tibia with nine tubercles at the lateral side, with slender spur near apex, all setae furnished. Tarsomeres of front leg slightly widened.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 82 View FIGURES 73–84 ). Median lobe moderately and regularly arcuate, in lateral view nearly parallel at middle, apex moderately elongated into a slightly arcuate spatula. Parameres moderately slender, with moderately developed apophyses, slightly distorted towards apices, hyaline apically, asetose.

Female gonocoxites and epipleurite ( Fig. 110 View FIGURES 110–128 ). Basal gonocoxite somewhat widened, with two long setae apically, gonocoxite II elongated basally, slightly curved, cylindrical in apical half in cross section, with three medium sized and one small seta, with two long setae apically positioned close together. Epipleurite wide-oval, with one medium sized seta.

Variation. Among the four specimens, the depression on the frons varies from completely explanated to slightly transversally hollowed out. The borders around the flattened area are more or less obtuse carinate.

Distribution. Known from the type locality Abuyog, province Leyte in the Philippines.

Diagnosis. A medium sized slender fuscous to rufous species with square to cordate pronotum and intervals seven and eight with isodiametric reticulation. A species sharing most of the basic characters (with exception of the colour) is C. gamma Andrewes. However , in C. gamma the female gonocoxites are of the very different falcate type, the pronotum with its margin is straight and more convex, on the elytron there is an apical setigerous punctures at stria two (beside the regular four setigerous punctures), and interval eight is completely carinate.

Etymology. The name refers to the head with its slightly hollowed out frons (Latin: caput = head; depressus, a, um = depressed).
