Clivina wallacei wallacei Putzeys, 1867 View in CoL

( Figs 30 View FIGURES 27–37 , 65 View FIGURES 53–67 , 97 View FIGURES 97–104 , 123 View FIGURES 110–128 )

Clivina wallacei Putzeys, 1867: 127 View in CoL ; Andrewes, 1926: 374; 1929b: 355; 1930: 119; Csiki, 1927: 127; Kult, 1951: 27; Darlington, 1962: 365; 1971: 255; Balkenohl, 2001: 17; Lorenz, 2005: 145; 2024: 5 ZB 8W.

Type material. Lectotype by present designation: ♂, with labels and data: yellow, handwritten in black ink “ C. Wallacei Ptz. Mak. (Wall. Schm.) ” / grey, handwritten in black ink and printed “ Clivina Wallacei Ptz. dét. J. Putzeys” / white, black framed, red printed “ Syntype ” / white, dark blue framed and printed “Soc.Ent.Belg. Coll. PUTZEYS” / white, handwritten in black ink and printed “ Clivina Wallacei Putz. cotype H.E. Andrewes 1928 ” ( RBINS).

Additional material. 1 ♀, Dorey / Bowring 63.47* / Clivina Wallacei Putz. Compared with type H.E.A. ( NHMUK) ; 1 ♂, 59.58. Dory , New Guinea. / Clivina Wallacei Putz det. K. Remarks. In the lectotype, the right front leg is missing.

Putzeys (1867, p. 127) writes at the end of his description [translated from French]: “ M. Schaum found two exemplars in the collection Wallace which he acquired. They came from Makassar (Célèbes). He gave me one. M. de Chaudoir also has two individuals which came from Dorey (Célèbes).” The specimen from M. Schaum is available in RBINS and served for the designation of the lectotype. The whereabouts of the second specimen is unclear. Inquiry at the MFNB revealed the second specimen is not in MFNB in the Schaum collection (written confirmation by the curator Bernd Jäger). The two specimens Putzeys quoted to be in the collection Chaudoir could not be located while checking the Chaudoir collection during my personal visit at the MNHN in November 2021 .

Andrewes (1926, p. 373 and 1929b, p. 355) obviously misinterpreted ‘ Dorey’ as a location in New Guinea. He quotes two specimens to be located in RBINS, including the ‘type’. The type was located in RBINS and is now designated as lectotype. The second specimen was dirty and after cleaning identified as member of the Clivina lobata -species group. The two other specimens from ‘Dorey’ Andrewes quoted to be deposited in NHMUK were localized there .

Darlington (1962, p. 330, 331, 366) cleared the misinterpretations regarding the geographic position of ‘Dorey’ also spelled as ‘Dory’. He thinks, this location is located in Celebes (today Sulawesi) and not in New Guinea.

Future collections will confirm if the species occurs outside Sulawesi.

The species is described by Putzeys (1867), redescribed by Andrewes (1926), and keyed out with descriptive information by Darlington (1962).

Compendious description. A medium sized fuscous species with the following measurements: Lectotype: Body length 5.39 mm, width 1.52 mm, ratio L/W of pronotum 1.93, ratio L/W of elytra 1.94. All material: Body length 5.39–5.74 mm (ẍ = 5.54 mm *), width 1.52–1.79 mm (ẍ = 1.61 mm *), ratio L/W of pronotum 0.89–0.94 (ẍ = 0.92*), ratio L/W of elytra 1.79–1.96 (ẍ = 1.91*); (*n = 5).

Head with labrum seven-setose, straight anteriorly. Median part of clypeus separated from clypeal-wing by distinct notch, lateral teeth of clypeus moderately projecting, rounded, clypeal-wing not as far projecting as clypeal-teeth, separated from supraantennal plate by distinct notch. Eye prominent, gena small but distinct. Clypeo-frontal furrow flattened but distinct; clypeus transverse; neck constriction closed, developed as step with punctures posteriorly. Frons with flat pore at middle, with scattered small punctures. Antennae subelongate, not reaching base of pronotum.

Pronotum ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 53–67 ) square to sub-cordate, wider than long, slightly convex in frontal and moderately convex in lateral view, with lateral margin slightly convex, widest at middle, angles distinct, posterior angle with tooth somewhat rounded and projecting anteriorly, lateral margin sub-crenate, disk with short impression bilaterally in basal half, with isodiametric reticulation laterally and at base; lateral margin from posterior angle to flange of base slanted with angle of around 30°, basal channel and carina of flange of regular size. Proepisternum with isodiametric reticulation, laterally with some transverse wrinkles.

Elytron ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 27–37 ) elongate, flattened in basal half in lateral view, lateral margin slightly convex, subcrenulated in anterior quarter, striae one to four ending free at base, interval three with four setigerous punctures; striae nearly impunctate; intervals slightly to moderately convex, interval seven and eight, and half of interval six as well as base and apical third of elytron isodiametrically reticulated, interval eight carinate in apical fifth, interval seven with shortened step-like carina at apex, striole distinct, setigerous tubercle at base distinct, with distinct tubercle at base of third interval.Abdomen with isodiametric reticulation, transverse at middle, two apical setigerous punctures widely separated.

Hind wing fully developed.

Legs. Intermediate tibia with nine tubercles with setae above the spur at the lateral side.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 97 View FIGURES 97–104 ). Median lobe relatively short, regularly arcuate in basal half, nearly straight in apical half, apex parable-like acuminated. Parameres moderately slender, distorted and hyaline in apical quarter, with medium long seta each.

Female gonocoxites and epipleurite ( Fig. 123 View FIGURES 110–128 ). Basal gonocoxite with apex acuminated into a tubercle with long seta, with second long seta in apical third, apical gonocoxite elongated, slightly curved, cylindrical in cross section, with two setae basally, with one medium sized seta in basal third and one at middle, with long seta at end of apical third, with two long setae apically. Epipleurite trapezoid, with small seta at each edge.

Variation. In one of the male specimens, the lateral margin of the pronotum is slightly more convex. On the frons of the head the number of scattered punctures vary.

Distribution. The species occurs on the island of Sulawesi. The occurrence in New Guinea needs confirmation (see remarks above).
