Tolono Rolston and Kumar, 1975 View in CoL
Type species: Tolono decoratus Rolston and Kumar, 1975 , by original designation.
Tolono Rolston and Kumar, 1975 , 82:272 (key)
Tolono : Froeschner, 1981, 322:9. (key)
Diagnosis.—General body shape oval, dorsal surface shining with a characteristic X-shaped design when the wings are in resting position ( Figs. 4, 5, 6), first antennomere not surpassing apices of paraclypei; clypeus extending slightly beyond apices of paraclypei. Ostiolar peritreme short, auriculate. Venter shining, impunctate; basal abdominal spine absent. One pair of Pendergrast’s organs on 7 th abdominal sternite.
The discovery of two new species of Tolono necessitates several small changes in the concept of the genus as follows: the bucculae may be more convex and not as prominent as in T. decoratus . Additionally, the connexival segments may be exposed as in T. pallidus . Finally, Rolston and Kumar (1975) described only the internal genitalia for Tolono . In the external male genitalia of the new species, the posterior margin of the pygophore may be straight, rounded, or convex.
Comments.— Rolston and Kumar (1975) did not place Tolono in any known acanthosomatid subfamily or tribe. The absence of longitudinal, medial carinae on the thoracic sterna, the absence of a basal abdominal spine or tubercule, the costal margins of the hemelytra not expanded laterally near base (“hump” of Kumar, 1974, absent), and the short, auriculate ostiolar peritreme, dictates that Tolono should be placed in the Ditomotarsinae: Ditomotarsini, as defined by Kumar (1974).
