Type species: Ardeosaurus brevipes .
Revised diagnosis: Ardeosaurus can be distinguished from other genera of squamates by the following combination of characters: paired premaxillae; the parietals fused and with weak lateral emargination (creating a narrow upper temporal fenestra); parietals with long supratemporal processes; posteromedial process of parietal present; pineal foramen present; frontoparietal suture straight; frontals paired; frontals expand posteriorly but not anteriorly; frontals interorbital/frontoparietal width ratio c. 0.5; postfrontal (or postorbitofrontal) forked medially; jugal without posteroventral process.
