1. Epidendrum caldense Barbosa Rodrigues (1881: 148) View in CoL .

Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Sur les arbus des champs de Caldas, Mar 1869, fl., Regnell III-1689 (holotype: S-R-1929 photo!; isotype: P 00467632 photo!) .

= Epidendrum paulense Cogniaux (1898: 159) View in CoL .

Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo: Habit in sylvis supra arbores ad Serra da Cantareira, 1 Jun 1884, fl., Commissão Geográfica e Geológica 2215 (lectotype designated here: BR 000000657387 photo!).

Notes: — Barbosa Rodrigues (1881) clearly stated that the type of Epidendrum caldense was deposited in the Regnellian Herbarium (Regnell. III.1689), currently at S ( Santos 2016, Stafleu & Cowan 1976). We were able to find two samples belonging to Regnell III-1689, the one at S that represents the holotype and an isotype at P. Seven years later, Cogniaux (1898) described Epidendrum paulense , which is currently considered a heterotypic synonym of E. caldense ( Pessoa 2020) . Cogniaux indicated in the protologue two specimens as types, Comm. Greogr. e Geol. prov. S. Paulo n. 2215 and n. 2542, and clearly indicated that both were deposited in his herbarium (“ in herb. Meo ”). The specimens were located at BR ( BR 000000657387 and BR 000000657147, respectively), where most of his collections are currently deposited ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976). As both specimens are syntypes, one should be selected as lectotype, according to the Code. Both herbarium sheets include handwritten notes by Cogniaux, but we designate n. 2215 ( BR 000000657387) as lectotype because it bears two inflorescences with several open flowers, whereas n. 2542 ( BR 000000657147) has a single inflorescence with three flowers.
