Type species. Odontomutilla abbottii Ashmead, 1899 by original designation (= Mutilla saussurei Sichel & Radoszkowski, 1869 , according to André 1901: 329), Afrotropical region.

Diagnosis. Female. Mesonotum laterally expanded to tooth or tubercle. T1 broadly disciform. T2 with large deep anterolateral pubescent fovea or linear felt line. MALE. Mesoscutellum bidentate posteriorly. Propodeum with posterolateral corners angulate or dentate. T1 broadly disciform. Both sexes of Odontomutilla are larger-bodied ( 8–18 mm) than the structurally similar Yamanetilla Lelej, 1996 ( 6–9 mm).

Species included and distribution. Currently this genus is composed of 100 valid species and 17 valid subspecies distributed mainly in the Afrotropical (59 species and 13 subspecies) and Oriental (35 species and three subspecies) regions, with four species and one subspecies in the Australian and two species in the Palaearctic regions ( Pagliano et al. 2020, updated; Lelej et al. 2020; Lelej 2023; Terine & Girish Kumar 2024; and current data) ( Table 1). Sixteen taxa have been named by Nonveiller (1975) for Afrotropical fauna, but never described ( nomina nuda).
