Holotype: ♂, “ DR Congo, Mai- Ndombe / Salonga NP, Ekongo camp / 02°45’23.09”S, 20°18’55.37”E, / March, 2018; leg. A. & T. / Prozorovs, V. Kravchenko et al.,” GS 1508 ( CGM / USTTB). GoogleMaps
Description. Male ( Fig. 3 View Figures 1–6 ). Flagellum speckled dark brown and straw. Head orangish brown. Prothorax speckled dark brown and orange, mesothorax speckled brown and orange, metathorax and abdomen brown to orangish brown. Forewing. Forewing length: 16 mm. Long with slightly convex costal margin and convex outer margin between M2 and CuP; apex rounded. Basal and outer areas dark orange, medial area speckled dark orange and brown, marginal area brown; antemedial line dark brown, somewhat c-shaped; postmedial line dark brown, fragmented; distinctive dark brown line pronounced along R-M stem; white crescent-like apical spot situated between R3 and R4. Fringe dark brown. Hindwing. Somewhat trapezoid, outer margin concave. Costal and medial area dark orange, anal and marginal areas dark brown; dark brown wavy medial line and dark brown medial dot present. Fringe white. Genitalia ( Fig. 6 View Figures 1–6 ). Tegumen a narrow band, dorsolaterally bears a pair of socii. Socii elongated, sclerotized, somewhat claw-like, loosely covered with setae. Cucullus bifurcated, dorsal extension thrice as long, both extensions claw like and loosely covered with setae. Sacculus compact, somewhat knoblike, loosely covered with setae. Vinculum ventromedially bears saccus. Saccus bilobed, each lobe elongated, thick, has rounded apex. Juxta stem-like, fused with aedeagus; bears pair of frontal processes about 1.5 times as long as phallus, each process claw-like, strongly bent in distal third. Phallus elongated, slightly c-shaped, with pair of apical slender sclerotized filaments supporting vesica. Vesica elongated, cylinder-like. Eight sternite somewhat trapezoid, distal margin dentated with larger dents on distolateral corners, basolaterally has pair of elongated apodemes. Female remains unknown.
Diagnosis. Opisthoheza martinnemcekae sp. n. differs from:
1) O. heza with overall smaller size and darker coloration, dark abdomen, narrower forewings with concave outer margin (compare Figs 3 and 1 View Figures 1–6 ); slightly larger socii, longer dorsal and shorter ventral process of cucullus, smaller saccus, less curved phallus, narrower vesica,
processes of juxta bent in distal third, less dentated distal margin of eighth sternite (compare
Figs 6 and 4 View Figures 1–6 );
2) O. siniaevi with overall smaller size and darker coloration, narrower forewings with concave outer margin (compare Figs 3 and 2 View Figures 1–6 ); larger socii, extensions of cucullus unequal in length,
smaller saccus, less curved phallus, processes of juxta bent in distal third (compare Figs 6 View Figures 1–6
and 5).
Distribution ( Fig. 7 View Figure 7 ). Central Congolian lowland forests in DRC.
Biology. Adult was collected around the end of the rainy season in March from an altitude of 350 m. Preimaginal stages unknown.
Etymology. The species is named in honor of Dr. Martin Nemček (Bojnice, Slovakia).
Acknowledgments
We are thankful to †Vasiliy Kravchenko (Tel Aviv University, Israel) for preliminary work in the Ekongo camp in March and April of 2017: setting up most traps, training local workers, and taking care of material under harsh conditions. We express our gratitude to the LuiKotale Bonobo Project leaders Barbara Fruth and Gottfried Hohmann for their help with the general curating of the insect collection from the project in Ekongo. A heartfelt thank you to LuiKotale and Ekongo camp managers Roman Keller and Alexis Louat who helped to organize, manage and maintain the daily work efforts in the camp. We appreciate the irreplaceable help of the Bekombo village people with collecting, sorting, packing, and transporting insects from Ekongo as well as with the daily routine in the camp.
A portion of the presented work was done by †Vadim Zolotuhin and Alexey Prozorov with the financial support of the Thomas-Witt-Stiftung.
