Description. Female. Body length 11.0– 12.8 mm.
Head. Flagellum moderately lanceolate, with 38–40 flagellomeres; 1 st flagellomere 3.7–4.2× as long as wide, 13 th flagellomere square, widest flagellomeres 1.5× as wide as long. Temple short, distinctly and roundly narrowed behind eye. OED 0.9× ocellar diameter. Frons with microsculpture, with sparse punctures dorsally. Face with microsculpture and rather dense punctures, shining. Clypeus almost flat, with rather dense punctures; apical margin blunt, almost straight. Mandible with two teeth, ventral tooth completely bent inwards, mandible apparently sickleshaped. MI 0.9. Gena densely punctate. Genal carina reaching hypostomal carina close to mandibular base, both carinae low.
Mesosoma . Notaulus impressed at frontal 0.2 of mesoscutum. Mesoscutum with dense fine punctures, granulate, ± dull. Mesopleuron and metapleuron densely rugose-punctate; speculum smooth; juxtacoxal carina present. Scutellum moderately convex, slightly wider than long, with rather dense punctures and lateral carina in basal 0.8. Area basalis and area superomedia confluent, with smoothened surface, strongly protruding frontally. Costula reaching distinctly posterior to middle of area superomedia. Hind coxa finely and densely punctate, without scopa. Hind femur finely punctulate, 4.5–4.7× as long as wide. External surface of hind tibia with 4–6 denticular spines in apical half. Areolet pentagonal, distance between veins 2rs-m and 3rs-m 2.0× their width; vein 2m-cu reaching distal to its middle. Vein 1cu-a postfurcal by 2.0× its width.
Metasoma. Oxypygous, Postpetiole moderately widened, without latero-median carina, median field with coarse longitudinal striae. 2 nd tergite 1.0–1.1× as wide as long. Gastrocoelus triangularly impressed, with coarse ridges. Thyridium 0.5× as wide as interval between thyridia. 2 nd and 3 rd tergite densely punctate; 2 nd tergite with distinct striae medially, median striation of 3 rd tergite only in basal half. 2 nd to 4 th sternites with median folds. Ovipositor sheath reaching far beyond metasomal apex by 1.0–1.5× length of 7 th tergite.
Color . Black, with rich ivory coloration. Flagellomeres 8–13/14 dorsally, ventral spot of scape, palps, clypeus and face except median black stripe, gena, complete orbits, frontal and upper margins of pronotum, subtegular ridge, longitudinal stripe of ventral mesopleuron, scutellum laterally, postscutellum, upper division of metapleuron, posterior half of area dentipara, posterolateral stripes of 1 st to 4 th tergites, sometimes narrow apical margins of 5 th and 6 th tergites and dorsal spot of 7 th tergite ivory. Fore and mid coxae and all trochanters ivory. Hind coxa black, with ivory spot baso-dorsally. Legs otherwise reddish; hind femur in apical 0.2 and hind tibia in apical 0.3 infuscate; hind tarsus blackish. Wings almost hyaline, pterostigma blackish-brown.
Male. Body length 12.0 mm.
Structure. Flagellum with 37 flagellomeres, bristle-shaped; 1 st flagellomere 3.1× as long as wide. Tyloids on flagellomeres 9–17, long-oval, maximally 0.7× as long as the flagellomeres. OED 1.1× ocellar diameter. MI 0.7. Hind femur 4.3× as long as wide. 2 nd tergite about as long as wide. Thyridium slightly oblique, 0.7× as wide as interval between thyridia.
Color . Black. Flagellum black. Palps, clypeus, face, gena, complete orbits except narrow interruption on vertex, scape ventrally, frontal and upper margins of pronotum, subtegular ridge, epicnemium, posteroventral spot of mesopleuron, side of scutellum, postscutellum, apical spot of area dentipara, posterolateral spots of 1 st to 3 rd tergites, narrow apical margins of 2 nd to 6 th tergites and apical band of 7 th tergite ivory. Fore and mid coxae and all trochanters mainly ivory; hind coxa black, with ivory spots antero-dorsally. Fore and mid legs otherwise reddish, its femora brown dorsally; hind leg black; hind tibia reddish-brown subbasally, its apical spurs ivory. Pterostigma dark brown.
Distribution. Japan (Yakushima Isl.).
Remarks. This species is closely related to the European Heresiarches eudoxius (Wesmael, 1845) ( Table 1) and might represent an East Palaearctic subspecies of H. eudoxius .
The small Taiwanese male described as Heresiarches minor Riedel, 2013 largely resembles the male of H. japonicus sp. nov. by its color pattern but differs by much smaller size (body length 6 mm).
